810: Accept No Substitute
Short Version:
Email and call your Senator, and say, "pass HR 810 right now, without amendments." And tell your 810 closest friends to do the same!
Long Version:
HR 810 was the bill that passed in the House, and it is about to be voted on in the Senate. Here's the key -- there are a slew of amendments being proposed right now to that bill by stem cell opponents. Why? Because if there's even one amendment, it will be different from the House bill, and instead of going to the President for his signature, it will go to a conference committee (i.e., "black hole").
HR 810 (also called SR 471 in the Senate) is the bill we need passed. Other bills are being introduced to help fund adult stem cell research, cord blood research, etc., but HR 810 is the one that eases the restrictions on embryonic stem cell research -- the type that offers the most promise. This is the one we need passed. It is a bipartisan bill, supported by Senators ranging from conservative Republican Orrin Hatch to liberal Democrat Edward Kennedy. But it is being held up by a small, ideologically driven group of Senators.

They are trying to load down the bill with "poison pills." Don't let them!
Jul 15, 2005 8:38:31 AMYes, that's exactly right. If they can add any amendments at all, it will have to go to committe.
We need 810 to pass, and we need it to pass without amendment. Make it you mantra...
Jul 15, 2005 8:43:11 AMThey're going to reject the bill to save lives from war in theory...cause it's a flip-flop electronic circuit. Millions of lives lost anually to war or millions of lives lost in a peacefully industrial society. Perfection is unattainable. Cut my heel just to watch it heal. We're never enough for John Hlinko as he cuts out our posts. This love of his is a wound that bleeds us all. You can kill us all by saving us all in a flip-flop circuit.

It is imperative that everyone call their Senators and urge passage of HR 810. Lives literally depend on it.
I work in the healthcare field, and I see so many more young diabetics than I used to. If we can help them now, and stem cell research holds that promise, maybe some of them won't have to have renal transplants later.
Jul 17, 2005 5:42:28 PMHR 810 isn't going to help anyone as long as republicans support President Bush and drug companies. Drug companies are buying up politicians faster than terrorists are blowing up folks, and will never simply turn over and play dead for better health sciences. We are in a mob ruled society where President Bush is the general incharge of an army of politicians, supreme court justices, and Rite Aide community pited against us as our enemy. Our parents have been murdered by this group as well as have our children, spouses and community. The war in Iraq was paid for by drug companies drumming up business and blocking action for stem cells.
Jul 20, 2005 2:07:15 AMHow rude of the post office to turn up their noses at their own families and friends and believe in the wild propaganda started by chemical based companies. Lost in the mail again and again and again due to mobster like postal services. Honesty and value went out the door when J Edgar Hoover elected his family to the post.
Jul 20, 2005 9:56:54 AMI believe David Wesley is a burned former employee of a drug company.
As a caregiver of a parent with Alzheimers I know first-hand at the misery and hardship it is to care for someone with this disease. A horrible disease. And if there is one lick of hope that this and other terrible disease can be alleviated then I am for it.
I believe if it is in our power to do so it is because God has given us that ability.
Religious authorities are not the voice and power of God. Only God is. It is their interpretation of what is in the Bible. Remember the Bible was written by man as the interpretation of God and Jesus' words.
I believe we need to study the ability of stem cell reaseach and see first hand its abilities to cure disease, or not. If we leave it in God's hands, in His time, He will show us that we can cure disease or that it is a failure.
Does anyone know the senators not supoorting this bill. I read the senators testimony and Frist is not for this bill without ammendments controling the exchange of money between fertility clinics and researchers. All the news stations are saying he is supporting it.
Jul 30, 2005 6:14:58 PMI just cried when I heard it was postponed...it made me so mad that I could find absolutely no reason for the postponement. I have to wonder what they're excuse will be next time.
Oct 24, 2005 8:01:03 AMi have a 19 year old daughter who is a diabetic and we are hoping that stem cell therapy would cure her. when you know how many lives you can touch with this one policy what are you waiting for. God give this opportunity to enhance and rectify others life only to a handful of people. When such an opportunity is given to you what is stopping you?You will have the blessings of millions who are suffering from incurable diseases .You will go into the history of mankind as the messaih of love --Please help mankind---jayashree
Nov 3, 2005 6:11:24 AMHR 810 supports of a waste of taxpayer money and the destruction of human life. ESC haven't demonstrated the ability to do anything but cause cancer in laboratory animals. Support ethical and effective adult stem cell research instead, and stop spreading the false, destructive hope of ESC.
Mark, I'll bet you also believe the world was created in seven days, circa 20,000 years ago and the earth in flat. Let's not forget that science can really do wonderful things!
I don't know anyone that dosen't support ethical stem cell research but, that includes embryonic stem cells that are to be discarded.
I submit that the only falsehoods that are being spread are by the fanatical christian fundementalist movement whose ultimate goal is a Taliban like control over the American people.
